Originally premiered in 2009 to launch the CD of the same name, ‘Rheō’ is a performance project mixing live music and contemporary dance. Percussionist Patrick Graham is accompanied by the electro-acoustic hurdy gurdy of Ben Grossman (Guelph), the Japanese and western flutes of Kaoru Watanabe (New York), and dancer/ choreographer Tomomi Morimoto (Montréal). ‘Rheō’- from the Greek root of ‘rhythm’, also meaning ‘to flow’- features a seamless blending of original cross-cultural compositions and adventurous improvisation with a focus on pulse and sound.

Glen Velez model bodhran, SlapBack, pandeiro, daff, dayreh, and (my favourite) kanjira all sounding and looking fantastic! Cooperman have been taking particular care recently to adding new touches and stains, finishing the drums off with some very distinctive looks… classy.
If you are in the Montreal area, stop by Timpano (2525 Rachel East) and try out the Cooperman drums. We are lucky to have a local shop that stocks these products.

I have attended several of these events, and they are very memorable experiences, for the artists and the attendees alike.
This year’s frame drum festival features a host of artists, including (the one and only!) Glen Velez, N. Scott Robinson, Matt Kilmer, Todd Roach, Shane Shanahan, Yshai Afterman, and others. Hosted by Cooperman Drums of Vermont, the festival will include wide-ranging workshops for all levels of players, intimate evening concerts, a Cooperman factory tour, and hiking opportunities in a beautiful area of the state.

Despite the impending end of the world this year, I am working on several exciting new projects: A benefit concert January 28th at the Gesu with Cordâme and guests; new instrumental trio Trifolia performs on February 17th (we’ll also be recording a first CD this year- stay tuned); Small World Project is composing the soundtrack to the silent animated film classic, ‘The Adventures of Prince Achmed’ (we’ll be performing this project live- stay tuned); and in July, I will be returning to Vermont to teach and perform at this year’s NAFDA North frame drum gathering (this year’s line-up is very exciting!).
Looking forward to 2012…
