Happy to share the first video from our session, July 10th, 2014: Kaoru Watanabe and I improvise, featuring a beautiful hamon set (created by Teppei Saito), gong, and bells. Audio and video by John Klepko, recorded at Timpano Percussion. Stay tuned, more to come! UPDATE: Here is the second video in the series, Kaoru’s beautiful […]
It’s happened regularly over the past several years that I’m asked to participate in recording sessions for video games. I’m fairly ignorant of which games are successful or popular and which are not, but it is a kind of thrill to participate in one of these mega projects. And more often now, the companies seem […]
I had a wonderful time this past week in Los Angeles. I spent some quality time with Kris Bergstrom of On Ensemble and the recently established Los Angeles Taiko Institute working on a new taiko-oriented arrangement of my composition ‘King Worm’. Kris is going to be using the piece as teaching (and potentially also performance) […]
April is a busy month, with two exciting trips in the works. First off is a visit to Brooklyn, to teach at Kaoru Watanabe’s Taiko Center, April 11-12-13. I’ll be sharing a weekend intensive program with the fantastic taiko artist Tetsuro Naito. We’ll be covering several topics including rhythm theory, katsugi oke-daiko, chappa and taiko […]
As 2012 comes to an end, I am really looking forward to seeing and playing with my friends from Los Angeles, On Ensemble, in early 2013. Gonna be a groovy start to the new year. We’ll be showcasing at APAP in New York city in January, with jolly taikoist and flutist extraordinaire, Kaoru Watanabe. APAP […]
Pleased to announce a special new project for this year’s Festival des traditions du monde de Sherbrooke: I am will be performing in a new quartet with Montreal’s Ignatius Kim, and two visitors from NYC, Barbara Merjan and my good friend and distinguished musician, Kaoru Watanabe.
Very excited about putting this music together.
Join us in Sherbrooke, if you can!
On August 10th, New York city based flutist and taiko artist Kaoru Watanabe will be visiting Montreal for a special event at Timpano-Percussion. Kaoru will instruct a taiko workshop open to the general public and we will do a short concert performance later in the evening, along with Barbara Merjan, taiko player from New York. This is a rare chance to experience the basics of Japanese drumming from one of North America’s best.
