More new video to share for the month of July. ‘Resonance’ is an solo improvisation featuring Japanese hand cymbals called chappa, part of my ongoing playlist of improvised solos.
I have been fascinated by chappa for a couple of decades, since hearing them used to brilliant effect by Kodo. In particular, ex-member Ryutaro Kaneko is responsible for pioneering a new design and new techniques that helped push these little instruments to the forefront of the modern taiko ensemble.
I think the chappa blend wonderfully with other instruments as well so the percussion-kit used in this video includes a beautifully-made, extra-large Hamina davul crafted by Eckermann Drums, metal spring instruments, including a bell by Pete Engelhart, and various cymbals.
